About Us
Benefit Services of Hawaii, Inc. (BSHI) started in the mid-1980s when HMSA offered a flexible spending plan to its own employees, administered through the Personnel department.
In 1987, the Flexible Spending Service unit was established to serve the increasing number of employers who were interested in a flex plan for their companies. On Jan. 1, 1988, the first flex group signed on. The program, known as Employee Benefit Services, had more than 100 groups by the end of the year.
On March 2, 1992, Employee Benefit Services became a wholly owned subsidiary of HMSA with a new name, Benefit Services of Hawaii, Inc. BSHI is a one-stop shop for employee benefit services, especially for small and mid-size companies. In the past, many of these smaller businesses could not offer flexible spending services and voluntary insurance because of the administrative burden.
BSHI continues to grow steadily, enhancing current products and adding new ones. BSHI plans to further expand its products and services while updating and improving customer service.
